How Loud Is a Car Horn?
A typical passenger car horn produces between 100 and 110 decibels measured a few feet from the front of the vehicle. Federal safety standards actually require car horns to be audible—most regulations specify a minimum output so the horn can be heard over traffic noise, which is why they're designed to be attention-grabbing. Larger vehicles are louder. A truck or bus air horn can reach 115–120 dB, and a train horn—engineered to warn people up to a quarter mile away—can hit 130–150 dB at the source, well past the threshold of pain.
