Terms of use

What you can expect from DecibelPro, what we ask of you, and — most importantly — what a browser-based measurement should and should not be relied on for.

Using the meter

DecibelPro is free to use and requires no account. You may use it for personal, educational, and commercial purposes, including screening noise in a workplace, running it in a classroom, and taking readings you share with others. You may link to it freely.

We ask that you do not attempt to disrupt the service for other people, scrape it in a way that degrades it, or present readings from it as having come from a calibrated instrument.

Measurement limitations — please read this one

This is the term that matters most, because acting on a reading is the whole point of the tool.

Readings are estimates produced from a consumer microphone that has not been calibrated and cannot be calibrated through the site. Their accuracy varies by device, browser, and operating system, and the accuracy page sets out the expected ranges honestly, including where they are wide. Readings above roughly 100–105 dB will typically under-report because consumer microphones compress and clip.

Do not rely on this meter for regulatory compliance, enforcement, litigation, insurance claims, formal noise complaints, or hearing conservation program monitoring. Those settings require a calibrated Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meter with documented calibration traceability. This tool is not certified to IEC 61672 and makes no such claim.

Nothing on this site is medical advice. Information about hearing damage and exposure limits is general educational material drawn from published sources. If you are worried about your hearing, see an audiologist.

Pro purchases

The meter and its core features are free. Pro is an optional paid tier that adds timed measurement sessions with saved charts and PDF report generation. It is offered both as a subscription and as a one-off purchase of a report, and which you have bought is shown on your account page.

Payment is processed by Stripe. Access is granted by a signed token stored in a cookie on the device used to buy it, so Pro follows the browser rather than an account — deleting site data removes access from that device, and the restore flow on the account page recovers it. Subscriptions renew until cancelled, and can be cancelled at any time from the billing portal linked on the account page; access continues until the end of the paid period.

Refunds

Refunds are considered on request, case by case. There is no fixed window and no automatic entitlement — write to [email protected] explaining the situation and we will look at it. If Pro did not work as described for you, say so and expect a refund.

This does not affect any statutory rights you have where you live, which apply regardless of what this page says.

Availability

The site is provided as it is, without a guarantee of uptime or of continued availability of any particular feature. Features may change; material changes are recorded in the changelog. If a paid feature is withdrawn while you are paying for it, that is a refund conversation and the paragraph above applies.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, DecibelPro is not liable for losses arising from reliance on a measurement taken with this tool, including decisions about hearing protection, workplace safety, or legal action. The limitations section above explains why: an uncalibrated consumer microphone is a screening device, and this site says so everywhere rather than in the small print.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Third-party links

Some pages link to products on Amazon through the Amazon Associates program, and we may earn a commission on purchases made through them. Those recommendations are ours; the commission does not change what we recommend. External sites operate under their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their content.

Changes and contact

These terms may change. The "last updated" date above reflects the current version, and continuing to use the site after a change means the current version applies. Questions go to [email protected]. The privacy policy covers what data is and is not collected.
